Decluttering and Mental Health

“A house is just a pile of stuff with a cover on it.”

George Carlin – comedian

Decluttering can have significant mental health benefits. There is a saying cluttered house, cluttered mind. When your house is cluttered from top to bottom, your mental health also suffers with anxiety and stress.

Here are some of the benefits of decluttering:

Reduces anxiety and stress: Clutter overwhelms our senses. We see clutter, we can smell clutter and we can feel it when we bumped into a pile of boxes on the floor. These clutter stimuli are not really important but they worked up our senses into overdrive. In order to reduce stress, we have to reduce the mess.

Improves mental focus A cluttered environment can be very disruptive and make it hard to focus on everyday tasks. Decluttering helps clear away distractions and leads to mental health clarity.

Enhances mood A tidy and organized space really do lift us up cause you feel peaceful and relax cause you can find a place to relax without stuff everywhere poking your back.

Boosts self-esteem A successful decluttering session gives us the accomplishment that we can control our environments and make positive changes in our lives. Give yourself a pat on the back for a job well done.

Increases productivity It is easy to find what we need to complete a project in a clutter-free space. After a decluttering session you find all the scissors that you misplaced in other places other than your kitchen or home office.

Letting go of emotional baggages Please let go of things that make you angry. A stack of photos of your ex-husband isn’t helping you to move on into a better mental space. The items that no longer serve us only bogs us down with emotional baggages. Time to let them go!!!
